Scenario Based Preparedness and Medical Skills

Classroom based training courses are just the opening act. Once the fundamental concepts have been input and accepted, they need to be pressure tested to be retained. Because, you do NOT rise to the occasion; You default to the level of training you have mastered - Under Stress.

"I walked into the PAL/RPAL courses feeling nervous because of my dyslexia, but Ed did an amazing job teaching in a way it stuck, and I was able to pass all my tests and get my licenses. Very happy I decided to get on the courses with Ed."

"My husband and I took the Pre-Hospital Trauma Medicine course after witnessing a fatal MVI last year. The class lectures were very informative, but a little overwhelming at first. The hands on approach and the attention we got from the instructor really helped us both figure it out. We now keep a trauma kit in each of our vehicles, know how to use them, and feel empowered to help if we ever need to."

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You’ve got questions, we get it. See below for answers to some of the most common queries.

Each course runs on its own schedule throughout the year. Check the course calendar on the page of the course you’re interested in to see if there is one that fits your schedule. If you have a specific group, team or agency that is looking for a closed course, email us at [email protected] to get set up.

Life happens, we get it. Bookings are refundable up to 1 week before the course date.

Due to the limited number of courses we run annually, and the limited size of each class, we try and allow as many people as we can accommodate on each course.

If you need to cancel your seat between 1 week and 24hrs prior to the course, we will attempt to fill that seat and we will place a credit on your file for a spot in the future. If you are within 24hrs, we are unable to process a refund.

The Canadian Firearms Safety Courses (Colloquially called the PAL and RPAL courses) were designed from the ground up for students with no prior exposure to or knowledge of firearms. We have excellent results with our multi-vector teaching model at bringing our students to a proficiency level that will enable them to pass both the written and practical exams.

Please understand that we do NOT guarantee our students will pass the exams – that depends on your commitment to take part in the classroom curriculum and ultimately you must take the exams on your own. The classes really do take the full day and are packed with information to absorb and digest. What we do promise is you will have all the necessary tools, theory and practical experience to enable you to succeed in the exams.

In the event you are not successful in either your written or practical exams, you have the option to re-write each one time, subject to conditions laid out by the Canadian Firearms Program. We will discuss these in greater detail on the day of the class.

The Canadian Firearms Safety Courses are both strictly non-firing courses. All of the firearms in the course have been disabled, and all ammunition is inert. This is a requirement of the Canadian Firearms Program. Please assist us in this by NOT bringing any live firearms or ammunition to the class for demonstration or question purposes.

The firearms courses are designed to provide the foundations of safe handling, transport and storage of firearms according to the law, but do also address safe operation and cleaning practices, as well as basic principles of marksmanship and shooting stances. These fundamentals should be best augmented by careful and safe live fire training under the eyes of a competent instructor or supervisor.

There are no prerequisites to take the course, anyone of sound mind can attend. Prior knowledge in first aid, CPR, nursing or TCCC/TECC will be of value, but students without this prior knowledge will still be able to learn and apply all of the principles taught.

Participants will both perform and receive application of tourniquets and other bleeding control interventions during the course of the class, and should be prepared to participate fully to get the most out of the training. Tourniquets in particular use pressure to compress arteries against bones and stop blood flow in order to keep blood in the body and save lives. Although the correct and full application of an approved tourniquet is quite safe, they are painful and do leave marks and occasionally light bruising on the skin. It is felt by all reputable instructors that the value of knowing how a properly applied tourniquet feels, and how tight to apply it for real, is so important to the student’s real world success that it is worth the risk of the temporary pain and the light skin marking, and we agree. Knowledge conquers fear, and this aspect of the training is one of the most beneficial to experience.

A note on Trauma: The course is focused heavily on trauma, damage to human bodies, and conditions that cause casualties to rapidly die. Some of the content and photography within the topics discussed could be difficult to digest. That makes this course unsuited to young persons, persons with sensitivity to images of blood, violence and broken bodies, and those who suspect they may be sensitive to the above for any personal reason. If you think you fall into any of these cases, please feel free to reach out and consult with us prior to signing up.

Our goal is to enable you to react to traumatic incidents you may encounter, forearmed with knowledge, skills and equipment to assist you in doing so. We do not want to incur any trauma in training due to the nature of the content.

Absolutely, we want to support your goals in becoming prepared to intervene in crisis situations.

The Pre-Hospital Trauma Medicine class includes a trainer kit for you to use in class and take home with you. These components remain quite functional for continued self practice at home, and can also be pressed into service in an emergency.

Additional trauma kits are usually available for sale in class, and kits and supplies can always be ordered before or after your class from our sister site at www.iridiumsolutions.ca.

Bottom Line: It Depends.

Some locations and agencies use nuclear gauges, radioactive exposure devices and/or other radiation emitting equipment. In those instances, where all participants are considered nuclear energy workers or equivalent, it is reasonable to tailor the scenarios to their situation. In that framework, exposure to radiation is possible.

In all other settings, where the profession or attendants do not regularly interact with potential radioactive threats, simulated exposure is used in the training.

It is our goal to forearm our students and clients with the knowledge, skills and procedures to effectively protect themselves from potential exposure while still affecting their primary goals/missions while not exposing them to harm or danger.
